Carlito's Way Review

They sure don't make them like they used to. For me, Carlito's Way is an extremely underrated Al Pacino movie. While it doesn't rank nearly as high as Goodfellas, it's a damn good crime story that's fully delivered with confidence, accompanied by superb performances by a talented cast, and might even surprise you as not being the Pacino bloodbath everyone's become accustomed to. If anything, you can consider it a nice little accompaniment to Scarface - a brilliant emotion one at that. 8.4/10.

5 Things That Drive Me Crazy

1) The way Subway arranges their cheese triangles
2) Plastic wrapped organic potatoes
3) Dishwashers that can't clean the top row of dirty cups
4) Day old donuts
5) Photos of delicious food taken with crappy cameras

Funny how these things all kind of revolve around food...

Shutter Island Review

Continuity error theories, multiple hallucination interpretations, and endless forum hypotheses. Only Scorsese can deliver such a package that leaves you scared shitless - not only due to the fact that it throws your mind into a blender, but the captivating sound work and pacing (which may be too slow for some) is crucial in delivering such gripping intensity that draws you into the main character's carnage up until the very end. An excellent film if you're a fan of post-movie conversations. 8.5/10.

The Ray Ban Hunt

Hot, hot McGuyver! I've been lookin' for a slick pair of sunglasses this Summer. These Ray Ban Wayfarer in marbled Tortoise seem like the perfect match. Even though $145 is a bit steep...

About My Blank Notebook

There's something about finding the perfect sketchbook that's become somewhat of an obsessive side hobby of mine these past few months. No logos, subltle barely-there white lines on the pages, and the ability to opens fully flat. Well, today the impossible has happened. And it's $24 without shipping from Europe.

Jobs and Gates: A Conversation

This made my day. Haha.

Retro Renovation

How I do enjoy a good DIY remix/revamp. Joelle from Umbu Lumiere recently picked up a curbside freebie and added her own visual twist to the chair. To keep some of the vintage intact, she kept a little bit of the original wood, repainted just the outer frame white, and even reused an old skirt for the seat. Now I kinda wish I had some reupholstering skills.

Frida Review

Hey now, Frida, you poor child. I always thought your paintings were amazing, but this movie has truly made me a bonafide fan of your work and well, you. I never thought about watching the movie Frida, nor was I interested in hearing this young girl's struggle to being one of the most powerful painters ever to walk this planet, but here I am, enjoying her story, falling in love with her, and soaking in the incredible soundtrack that accompanies it. See Frida if love music, brave women, and inspiring art. See Frida, you'll love it. 8.7/10.

Sir Banks may not be my favorite street artist of all time, but he certainly ranks up there. Just recently, he's decided to show New York some of his Sharpie love.

Raw Sunshine

Sun hasn't been very welcomed here these past few days leading up until summer. Here, in Indiana, we get loud thunder followed by huge downpours followed by a short glimpse of the sun through the rainclouds.

I think it's time to fly to Cali. Just for a few weeks. And I'll do it to my newest summer anthem (last year's was MGMT's Kids). It just so happens to be one of my favorite songs this month from one of my favorite bands of all time; Tokyo Police Club.

Having One's Cake and Eating It Too

Some planned renovations are coming this summer to my online portfolio. No longer shall I put up with manual coding into the wee hours of the night. Content management systems (CMS) are where it's at (Above, Cargo Collective), leaving room for time spent on quality rather than Notepad++.

Mexican Weekend Bacon Wrapped Hot Dog Recipe

"I want to make stuffed hot dogs," he added, "on the grill."
  • 8 hot dogs
  • 8 hot dog buns
  • 8 slices bacon
  • mayonnaise, as needed
  • ketchup, as needed
  • mustard, as needed
  • 1 bag coleslaw
  • 1 jar coleslaw sauce
  • 2 jalapeno peppers (optional)
  • 1 (15 ounce) can pinto beans (non refried) or chili bean
Mix up the coleslaw with coleslaw sauce, along with some chopped jalapenos if you want it extra spicy. Place aside.

Wrap bacon around each hot dog and put on the skillet/grill and cook until bacon is done (cook the bacon to your satisfaction). The bacon usually sticks to the hot dog, but if it doesn't, you could use toothpicks to keep them together. While waiting, warm up the beans/chili.

Spread mayonnaise on the hot dog buns. Put the bacon wrapped hot dog on the bun, at this point you may put the ketchup and mustard as desired. Pour about 1 spoonful of beans/chili over the hot dog. Throw coleslaw mix on top and serve.

Iron Man 2 Review

Topping the first film is no easy feat and of course Iron Man 2 might even be considered a disappointment if one were to "go there." But it is nonetheless one of the most entertaining comic book movies as of late and despite what appears to be a money-maker formula by Marvel, still manages to mix a satisfying mix of action, wit, drama, and appeal to the fans that's value true spirit of its source material while nicely tailoring itself to the tastes of the modern movie audience. 8.2/10.

Why Time Travel Shall Never Work

You gotta admit, this is very true. Naturally, you would think jumping in one-year increments would be the correct solution.

But even if you do it in one-year jumps, do you go by actual years or by 365 days?

365 days won't help you, of course, because you'll be still six hours off-course, which is about 600,000km.

If you go one actual year forward / backward, you'll be about 90 degrees longitude off-course due to the Earth's rotation. Not a big deal unless your velocity vector travels with you, in which case you'll either slam into the surface of the Earth or be launched several miles into the air.

So the next solution would be to do some serious math and figure at what points in time the Earth's position and angle of rotation would be the same as they are now. This puts a substantial limit on the number of possible jump-points, but it must be considered for safety reasons.

Lastly, this all assumes that the Sun is stationary in space, which... it isn't.

Fantastic Mr. Fox Review

Now, this is simply divine. In an age where Pixar seems to be eating up all the spotlight in terms animated features, it takes some cajones and talent to turn one of my childhood books into one of most beautiful universes ever created - and all in stop motion, too. From the wonderful music selection to the delightful characters centered around a plot that's easily digestible for parents and children alike, the sheer energy, confidence, and downright brilliance of execution truly makes Fantastic Mr. Fox one of the most memorable films I've ever seen. 9.4/10.
